Despite the cold weather, this weekend Jardin Orange’s debut gallery opening was a huge success! More than 400 people came from all parts of the region, including Guangzhou and Hong Kong, to see the diverse collection of original artworks.
The main gallery featured street art videos and artist documentaries. There were creative sculptures and colourful artworks floating on the walls. Outside, there was the trademark orange VW van selling drinks and, of course, visiting artists painting tigers at the entrance to the Sofunland area.
Starting from around 4pm, the doors to the second floor of the building were opened to the public and tours were given to groups of people of the artist studios and galleries. At 6pm, the first JO resident artist of 2017, Rebecca “NFN8” O’Brien, arrived to meet the waiting crowd of friends and acquaintances. She gave personal tours of her solo exhibition called “Lines and Strokes” and answered dozens of questions regarding her technique using Chinese ink to curious viewers. (The exhibition name alludes to her process of combining quick and 'messy' brush strokes and water drops with fine, deliberate ink lines.)
Overall, the feedback received of the whole event was extremely positive. People reported how “refreshing” it was to finally have a 'go-to' spot to see and meet new artists and examine their work. Many others said how excited they were to find out that this kind of event will be happening every month or so.
