Rashad Alakbarov, born in 1979 in Baku, Azerbaijan, has worked across different media and genres, including painting, sculpture, theatrical decorations, video art and architectural design. In recent years, his shadow installations have become best known. His sculptural works have been exhibited at the Art Basel, the Cosmoscow Art Fair, the Vienna Contemporary Art Exhibition, the Venice Biennale, the Azerbaijan Modern Art Exhibition and the Baku Modern Art Museum.
Rashad's works comprise large-scale yet subtle installations, containing objects, unique or homogenous, that are arranged in front of a light-source to cast shadows in unexpected configurations. Under standard lighting, the sculptural works have little or nothing to do with the shadows projected, revealing the hidden duality that lies within the artist's work.
